MC LEAN, VA - The Retail Bakers of America (RBA), sponsor of the SkillsUSA Championships in Commercial Baking, announced the winners of the competition on Friday, June 23, 2006 at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference Awards Ceremony. The Conference held June 19 - 23, 2006, in Kansas City, MO had over 4,700 outstanding career and technical education students join in the excitement of hands-on competition in eighty-four different trade, technical, and leadership fields.
The list of top medal winners in the Commercial Baking Competition is as follows:
First Place - Gold
Post-Secondary: Kim A. Stark - Utah Valley State College - Orem, UT
Secondary: Krista Burgoyne - Minuteman RHS - Lexington, MA
Second Place - Silver
Post-Secondary: Melissa Grimm - Johnson & Wales University - Providence, RI
Secondary: Tim Dunsmore - Cumberland-Perry AVTS - Mechanicsville, PA
Third Place - Bronze
Post-Secondary: Alexandra Fisher - Truckee Meadows Community College - Reno, NV
Secondary: Lisa Ercanbrack - Davis Applied Tech Center - Kaysville, UT
The Commercial Baking Competition challenges contestants to meet production and quality criteria consistent with industry standards. Students must scale, mix, prepare, and bake six products including breads, rolls, danish, cookies, and pies, as well as demonstrate cake-decorating skills. They must deliver a quality, salable product while working efficiently and under job-like conditions.

"RBA is pleased to support SkillsUSA and congratulates the Commercial Baking Competition winners and all the dedicated students who participated," noted RBA Executive Vice President Susan Nicolais. "RBA's sponsorship of the competition is an investment in the retail baking industry, its future workforce, and the greater community."
As sponsor of the competition, RBA provides the equipment, ingredients and judges. The first place, second place, and third place winners receive stipends of $500, 300, and 200 respectively to use toward tuition, books, uniforms, supplies, equipment or other related expenses.
